Floorcloths originated in Europe and gained popularity in America in the mid 1700’s. Early ones were handpainted and stenciled; printed ones followed in the mid 1800's. The advent of patenting linoleum in 1860 brought about the decline of the handpainted floorcloth. In recent years there has been a resurgence because of their distinctive designs and durability.
