In another of my experimentations with other materials, I was fortunate to receive a magic pencil for a gift. This is none other than the Apple pencil aka stylus that works with an ipad.
I’ve just started to work with it and here are some observations. It feels comfortable in the hand and works like a pencil responding almost instantly to any mark you make. Using the app “My Brushes Pro” I was able to easily touch the screen to change colors, line weight etc. Zooming in on the screen allowed me to draw finer details.
Once charged, the pencil provides twelve hours of battery life. If the charge runs out in the middle of a drawing, you can charge it on the side of the ipad for fifteen seconds and get an additional thirty minutes of power!
The end of the pencil has a magnetic cap that exposes a lightning connector allowing you to charge the pencil. I’m a little anxious of losing this cap. I asked the Apple folks if it was an easy replacement and was told they do not sell it separately. There is also a small piece that connects to the charging cord as well. Small pieces are easily misplaced and I’m trying to keep track of them. I decided to buy a Spec StyleFolio that has a pencil case for the stylus so that doesn’t go missing too.
It’s great on airplanes since it doesn’t take up space like a laptop. Also it’s a one stop studio; you don’t have to pack all your paints, brushes, water container and paper. It’s fun to draw with and I look forward to it becoming second nature. I had given up using a stylus since they all had issues. This one is in a category by itself and pretty magical.
