Most artists spend all their time in the studio diligently working away on their art. While it’s wonderful to be so devoted, sometimes you need to break away for a fresh perspective. You can set out for a walk, go to a museum, have lunch with a friend or travel the world. Each will give you a change of pace and may inspire you.
I happened upon the Wynwood Art district in Miami last year. It was an area marred by gang violence and race riots but has made a staggering about face. In 2009, artists were invited to paint murals on the walls of old warehouse buildings. It is now about 16 blocks of wall murals, art galleries, coffee shops, performing art spaces and restaurants. Paint and imagination has thoroughly transformed a once blighted area into one of the largest outdoor street art installations.
I found the whole neighborhood awash in color and incredibly inspiring. It was a wonderful departure from the studio and an energizing reset on my refresh button.
